COURSE RATIONALE

Introduces students to the fundamentals of Dance Composition as well as the elements of dance to elevate their choreography.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This unit provides students with an introduction to the fundamentals of dance performance techniques and their manipulation based on the different settings (on-stage, on-screen/in front of a camera, audition preparation, competition). Students will complete weekly studies and creative exercises exploring these techniques and finish the course with a digital portfolio of completed exercises.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the completion of this unit a student should be able to:

  • Identify the fundamental elements for dance composition

  • Performs, composes, and appreciates dance as an art form

  • Identifies and selects appropriate elements of composition/choreography in response to a specific concept/intent

  • Recognises and values the role of dance in achieving individual expression

  • Explores, applies, and demonstrates the combined use of compositional principles in a personal style in response to a specific concept/intent

CREATIVE PORTFOLIO

Online portfolio - google drive (compilation of videos)
Online Creative Digital Portfolio will consist of 4 set routines that will be pre-recorded by the teacher. Students will learn the choreography via the pre-recorded videos. Students will be required to submit 2 videos of the learned choreography of the week:


A video to showcase the generation, manipulation, abstraction, and organisation of movement.  The specific brief for each exercise is given in the weekly session. The brief of the performance: The submission for each exercise should be: Video files in MP4


Students will need to provide a written summary of their understanding of the dance performance techniques used for the choreography learned for the week.


Students will receive weekly in-class feedback and written teacher feedback.


Creativity requires self-motivation and disciplined practice. You are required to present work (or work-in-progress) in class each week so as to:

  • Demonstrate steady progress

  • Benefit from the cumulative nature of creative work

  • Contribute to class discussions

  • Develop time-management skills

Hip Hop Choreography

Students will complete weekly studies and creative exercises exploring these techniques and finish the course with a digital portfolio of completed exercises.

  • Performs dance skills with confidence, commitment, focus, consistency, and performance quality, and with due consideration of safe dance practices.

  • Utilises the skills of research and analysis to examine dance as an art form.

  • Demonstrates in written form the ability to analyze and synthesise information when making discriminating judgments about dance.

  • Acknowledges that the art form of dance is enhanced through reflective practice, study and evaluation.
